Help for Physics Job Seekers
There are many resources available for job seekers in physics.
Foremost the
job seeker needs to make contact with the UMD office of Career Services. They
will begin the job seeking process with you by first having you fill out an
interest profile. This takes about an hour of your time. From that
profile a long list of relevant job titles will be developed. Then
you meet with a career advisor in that office continue the search process. You
can get an overview of what that office does by visiting their web
site at http://www.umd.umich.edu/careerservices/ . Some of the services
offered are help in resume writing, interviewing skills (including a video
mock interview), and access to various job data bases and job search workshops.
The American Institute of Physics has a number of web sites that provide information to job seekers. For information on job lists, employment centers, or a copy of their career manual go to http://www.aip.org/careersvc/ . For information on who has hired physics batchelor's recently or a report on women in physics go to http://www.aip.org/statistics/.Yet another web site is the one run by the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point: http://www.uwsp.edu/career/JobSearchInfo/JobSrchByFields/Science.htm.
Looking over the Want Ads in your local papers is a good way to identify potential employers. Obtain their web address from the ad and visit their site. Most employers let potential employees apply via the web. But before applying look over their site to find out what that firm actually does, why they are hiring and what their application procedures are. Tailor your cover letter to suit their needs (not yours) according to the information that you obtained from their site.
